Just another Sunday

Not long ago, I watched a video on Youtube that was about a special “sunday service” for professed atheists. It was called Sunday Assembly . The oddity of such a gathering came when I realized that almost every aspect of the service was a direct “look-alike” to the average Sunday morning worship programs held in churches across America. There was singing. In fact one of the songs was about “keeping your head up” (Of course, my thoughts are why you would need your head to be “up”, if there is no hope written on the stars). There was a special speaker who used various anecdotes which rehashed the atheistic “creed” that you only live once and then death, so you are to make the most out of life (Again, quandaries abound when one realizes that the path of “making the most out of life” is always relative to people's perception of what gives life meaning.) Also, during the service, there was a time of giving in which certain individuals would pass out a donation box. Of course, I ...

THE UNCONVENTIONAL CHRISTMAS POEM

Though Christmas was over a week ago, I found this poem I had written a while back that, to me, is still a needed reminder as we make “preparations” for the next Christmas. Once a year, they sing “Peace on earth” Once a year, they celebrate my birth Presents under the tree, Lights around the yard Just for me, they max out their credit cards Once a year, they remind people that I’m the reason Why they are to celebrate this most joyous season But why in the summer, do they not say a word Daily the number grows of people who have not heard Once a year they remind each other to freely give Yet everyday there are ones struggling to live I did not come for a day of observance But to seek and to save that I might take up residence To transform lives into new creations That they might bear fruit and share the hope of salvation So go buy gifts and go hang lights Go plan a party for Christmas Eve night Yet, know that I’ll not...

IN THE STILLNESS

Psalms 46:10  Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. Much can be heard, when you are standing still simply to listen to what is around you.  I recall one incident, while in a park waiting for someone to arrive; I began to notice the sights and sounds around me more distinctly. The jumbled mass of people turned out to be different faces with specific features. The muffled noise of nature slowly became many diverse, yet unique sounds. I heard the trees rustling in the wind. I saw the children playing near the street. I heard people laughing and dogs barking. The park came alive, as I sat still simply waiting for a friend to arrive. This is because our stillness magnifies our surroundings. In a sense, this is why God commands His children to “Be still.” Oh, if Christians would only stop their busy routine for one moment and “be still” in prayer, then God would be magnified, in their own hearts, as who He t...

EXCUSING CHURCH

It has been months since my last article. I will not digress into all the factors as to why this is the case, only to mention that I am now ministering at Corinth Free Will Baptist Church in Alma, GA and my wife and I now have a beautiful 4 month old daughter added to our already rambunctious, and blessed family. Excusing Church In some form or another, I have heard the same statement for almost fifteen years - “I don’t have to go to church!” It may not be directly stated by certain people, but they will definitely get their point across that they do not “need” church. Now, understand that I am not referring to those who hold onto an atheistic or agnostic belief. I am writing about people I have met, through the years, who have claimed to believe in God and even in, for the most part, the preservation of His Word. I found that many of them were at one time faithful members of a church, yet stopped going to services either due to a church conflict, or just sheer busyness on t...

Thanksgiving

It has been a while since I have posted on my blog and my intention has been to continue writing on the last subject regarding CORRUPT COMMUNICATION; however, since Thanksgiving is coming up, I figured I would join the vast array of blogs that have or will have articles about thankfulness (I don't always go against the grain!). I am simply going to paste two articles that I have written for the church bulletin. God bless and don't ever stop thanking Him! (11/03/13)             Often, in the month of November, we are reminded to be thankful for the blessings of life. Proverbs 17:22 states , “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” It may be simple, but one thing we can be thankful for is the gift of laughter. It’s not only proven healthy for the body, but also it is free of charge! So, I want to give you a funny list of act...

CORRUPT COMMUNICATION

Ephesians 4:29   Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.         Often when I would read this verse, I thought about curse words, blasphemies, words spoken in anger ect. However, the word corrupt bears the meaning of “worthless words.” It may seem farfetched, but you can hear “corrupt” speech from the pulpit just as easily as you can from the nearest pub. Now, before you mentally fling tomatoes at me, you must understand that in no wise am I stating that going to a worship service and going to wal-mart will bring about the same results. No. What I am seeking for you to see is that no matter the setting and even the “way” we says things, our spiritual conversations can fall so far from true edification. Because although what we say sounds good, it is mixed with plenty of error. Sadly, a half   truth can be deadlier than a full ...

Rest and Rejoice

It has been a while since my last article. It seems as if right when Stephanie and I got back from vacation, I have been in overdrive. Most of the blame for such an arduous schedule falls directly on me. For this summer, I decided not to purchase any VBS material, but "simply" write my own. Now anytime I see the letters VBS I only think Very Busy Summer. Of course, this summer has opened up several blessings for ministry. One such is that I have had and will have several opportunities to speak at a Youth Enrichment program with roughly 25 kids. Still, it can be easy in life to get so busy that somehow you find yourself blinded to God's blessings, embittered over ministry, and increasingly discouraged. I write this because this is what happened to me. For some time, my walk was just aimlessly floating on the ocean of life. My studies whether personal or for preaching seemed to have lost depth. My attitude and at times my actions little exemplified an "overcomer...
