In Carthage, there has been a lot of talk lately over the High School's new Big Screen in the Football Stadium. It is one of the largest HS Football Screens in America. There was an interesting article about it on Yahoo sports. It costs roughly around $750,000. Statistically, around forty percent of people in Carthage claim to be Baptists (Not just Christian, but Baptist). Yet, I find it so amazing how many people here idolize sports, paticularly Baseball and Football. I am certainly not seeking to piously condemn the whole city. I enjoy many types of sports, but I pray my enjoyment and fun for them never turns to an ever-increasing fixation. Instead of the screaming fan on the sidelines whose face paint is slowly dripping off with a mixture of sweat, I consider myself to be the guy who gives a couple of approving grunts and simply tips his hat, when the game is over. What about you? Sadly, the "hat tipper" role is what people give to God, while they reserve their "Fanatical" role to the glory of sports.
FANATICS
I'll recruit them when their young
People say I'm all in good fun
I keep so many out late
I promise fleeting accolade
I make people howl, shout, and cry
Others throw fits, cheat, or lie
Its all in the name of competition
stealing hearts and minds is my mission
I am their ultimate responsibility
Those who care not for me are much to pity
People come with hearts ablaze
Over a game that ends in one day
True, there are other things crying for attention
like worldly poverty & malnourishment
But none of these dazzle the eyes
Only I offer a chance for bragging rights
It's a wonder why I don't have more fans
Those who are not must be homeless or orphans
Maybe one day the world will stop adoring and praising me
But that would mean they would have to deny their own vanity
So, without hesitation, I bid you adue
Oh I forgot my name is sports, what about you?
